Revitalization Strategies for Existing Building – Lessons from the Netherlands by Wilco van Bemmel, World of Walas
On May 31st, Wilco van Bemmel of World of Walas will present at the Canada Green Building Council’s Building Lasting Change Conference.
In developed economies, at least half of the buildings that are in use in 2050 have already been built. This means that the sustainability of our cities depends largely on how we use and reuse the existing building stock. Successful revitalization and repurposing of buildings is – however – a great challenge. Many technologies are available, but making these work for existing properties remains a difficult task. In this session, we explore strategies to revitalize existing buildings and draw lessons from the Netherlands. We look at projects including a former textile factory, an abandoned 1960s office building and post-war community housing.
